Cadwell Park is synonymous with some of the biggest clashes and some of the defining moments in recent BSB history and with only three of the current riders on the grid having tasted victory in Lincolnshire there could be history made on August Bank Holiday (29/30/31 August).
Last season the King of Cadwell Park Leon Haslam took a winning double for HM Plant Honda; their first and only double of the year, whilst team-mate Cal Crutchlow crashed out of contention for the win at Hall Bends early in the race.
In 2007 Haslam was victorious again, this time on the Airwaves Ducati, whilst the hard-charging rookies Jonathan Rea and Leon Camier came to blows. The pair were team-mates, with Camier running the satellite Bike Animal Honda colours as opposed to Rea's HM Plant livery but there was no team loyalty when they clashed on the approach to the Mountain leaving both crashing out. Rea was able to rejoin but in a bid to make up the ground he had lost, he crashed again. He bounced back though to win the second race of the day for the HM Plant Honda team whilst Camier suffered a huge crash in race two that broke his leg, ruling him out the remainder of the season.
There was another historic team-mate tussle in 2005, with Gregorio Lavilla and Leon Haslam swapping paint on the Airwaves Ducatis in race one. The pair had been the dominating force during the race, with Haslam leading before Lavilla stole the advantage on the penultimate lap. Not wanting to settle for second, Haslam attempted a pass at Park on the final lap but ran in too hot, putting them both on the grass which left Tommy Hill to take his maiden BSB race win. Haslam was able to make amends in race two though with a win for the Airwaves Ducati team.
Championship title contenders traditionally have never had the best of luck at Cadwell Park with Ryuichi Kiyonari, John Reynolds and Michael Rutter all having their standings suffer after crashes at the demanding Lincolnshire track.
Only Michael Rutter, Chris Walker and Tommy Hill have stood on the top step there before, so it could be a maiden win celebrated on Bank Holiday Monday. One thing is for sure though; it is going to be a dramatic tussle for supremacy before the chequered flag.
The next round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship in association with Pirelli is Cadwell Park's 'Party in the Park' on August Bank Holiday weekend (29/30/31 August). Book now by calling 0870 950 9000 or by visiting www.cadwellpark.co.uk
