Airwaves Yamaha's Leon Camier has finally put his Cadwell Park demons to rest after securing the opening race win in the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship in association with Pirelli.
It was Confused.com Kawasaki's Simon Andrews that took the hole shot into Coppice on the opening lap after running side-by-side with Hydrex Honda's Stuart Easton who then took the lead. Camier was running third although he made a move on Andrews at Charlies to move second, but he fought straight back when he dived down the inside at Barn.
Camier wasn't going to be deterred by the sudden pass by Andrews and a lap later he was able to out-drag him to make a pass at Charlies to move second. He repeated the move just a lap later on Easton to take the lead and then extend a gap over his battling rivals.
Camier said: "That race definitely all went to plan and it was just awesome for me to win here. I just need to keep doing it and not lose focus as you can't get complacent. We have had a smooth weekend so far so to win the race is a great result for the Airwaves Yamaha team. All I can say is job's a dream!"
There was an intense scrap for the final two podium steps between Easton, Ellison and rookie Ian Lowry on the Relentless Suzuki by TAS. Ellison had been fifth in the opening laps after a slow start but he was able to pass the Buildbase Kawasaki of John Laverty at Coppice on the hectic second lap. He was also able to take advantage of third place Andrews making a mistake at Charlies to move to third.
The Easton, Ellison and Lowry trio were inseparable and the Airwaves Yamaha of Ellison was clearly desperate to try and pass. He made several attempts to pass at the end of the Park Straight, but Easton was determined and on several occasions the pair were almost touching on the run towards the Gooseneck.
Easton was able to hold off Ellison's challenges after some brave late braking moves to hold the Airwaves Yamaha behind, with Lowry able to secure his best result of the season with fourth place.
The dicing Confused.com Kawasaki duo were sitting fifth and sixth, with Andrews holding the advantage for much of the race until team-mate Julien Da Costa edged ahead on the penultimate lap. Andrews was fighting back though and as they approached Barn on the final lap he made his move, but going in too hot the pair were both forced wide onto the grass. Andrews eventually was able to cross the line ahead of his team-mate to take fifth.
HM Plant Honda's Karl Muggeridge worked his way up through the grid to finish seventh despite coming under pressure from Sylvain Guintoli in the final laps, with the pair alongside as they took the chequered flag.
