James Ellison was handed victory in the final MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship in association with Pirelli race of the day at Cadwell Park after his team-mate Leon Camier was excluded from the result on the final lap.
Camier crossed the line first, but the championship leader was excluded from the result after he failed to observe the black and orange flag shown to him on the last lap for smoke. Ellison was therefore promoted to first to take his third race victory of the season for the Airwaves Yamaha team.
Ellison said: "We worked hard for that result, especially after having a disappointing practice but it certainly paid off. I was behind Stuart Easton again and I just knew I had to go for it, so from 200 yards back I just went for it and it stuck. I knew I could pull a gap and I was giving it everything. It is obviously better to win outright but you have to take these wins as they come."
Stuart Easton got a characteristic flying start off the line from John Laverty and Camier. The Airwaves Yamaha rider wasted no time in trying to make his move though, passing the Buildbase Kawasaki at Charlies, before repeating the same move on race leader Easton just a lap later.
Ellison was also on the move and passed Easton at Charlies on the third lap, finally making the move like he attempted in race one. Simon Andrews followed Ellison's passing manoeuvre when he dived down the inside of Easton a lap later at Barn.
The Audi R8 Safety Car was deployed on the sixth lap when Michael Howarth suffered a technical problem and there was oil left on the track at Coppice. The race was back underway on lap nine and the pack had bunched back together with Easton getting a better restart and passing Andrews into Coppice. The fairing bashing hadn't stopped there though and Andrews was back ahead by the time the pair had reached Park on the same lap.
The pair were still dicing for the final podium spot on the penultimate lap but Easton fired himself down the inside at Park and Andrews was unable to take the place back despite his best efforts.
Relentless Suzuki by TAS rookie Ian Lowry had a disappointing end to his day at Cadwell Park after crashing out at Park in the later stages of the race. John McGuinness was another rider not to finish when he retired to the pits with two laps remaining.
There was a dramatic moment on the penultimate lap when Camier's Airwaves Yamaha was smoking and after being under inspection he was shown the black and orange flag. The Airwaves Yamaha failed to stop though and completed the final lap, crossing the line with an advantage ahead of team-mate Ellison and Hydrex Honda's Easton. The championship leader was then excluded from the result for failing to stop, gifting the win to team-mate Ellison.
Camier's Airwaves Yamaha was inspected by the technical officials following the second race in the presence of team members and put on the dyno and there was evidence of a suspected piston ring failure. This failure would have caused the smoke, leaving the race director no option but to show the black and orange flag to warn of a mechanical failure.
Julien Da Costa had another strong finish in fourth to stay ahead of Buildbase Kawasaki's John Laverty, whilst Chris Walker held off Sylvain Guintoli for sixth place.
